80 new pieces launched at the ‘Art on the corridor’ exhibition

The ‘Art on the corridor’ exhibition, located along the corridor at Fieldhead, welcomed a new collection of artworks, created by staff, service users, volunteers, ward-based groups, community groups and Creative Minds partners from across all our areas.
The exhibition was opened by Chief Executive Mark Brooks and Chair Marie Burnham in an event held at the Mental Health Museum that was attended by colleagues, service users, colleagues and local artists, before proceeding to the corridor to view the exhibition.
Mark said “We’re incredibly proud of the exhibition. We really want to put the person first and in the centre to help them on their road to recovery. The creative work and therapies we offer make a real difference, so a huge thank you to everyone who has contributed to the exhibition.”
Marie added: “Thank you very much to everyone involved with this project. I have a passion for art and history, so this is at the core of my heart and values. I will enjoy the artwork every time I walk along the corridor and I am sure others will do the same.”

The exhibition, which was originally launched in 2012 by Creative Minds, was the result of consultation workshops with stakeholders to develop more creative approaches and showcase creative talents using the corridor spaces and plain walls across Trust sites.
Phil Walters, Creative Minds strategic lead commented: “The response we got was amazing and we have developed the approach in other Trust sites in our areas. The captivating artwork displayed gave the artists pride in seeing their talents appreciated and admired by all who visit the hospital. Many people have commented that the artwork really brightens up the corridors and makes it a pleasure to walk down.”
One of the artists who contributed to the collection said: “Art really is therapeutic and a great way of expressing your own character. Creativity is so important in recovery and opportunities like this will inspire others to begin or continue their own creative journey.”

The current launch is the third major refresh of inspirational artwork on display. The collection features a range of acrylic paintings, poetry, photography, digital art and collages, brightening the corridor with plenty of creativity, expression and character.
A colleague who attended the launch added: “It was so lovely to have the opportunity to meet the artists today and hear the inspiration behind their work. For some people it is the first time they have had work exhibited.”
