With the support of activity facilitator Nateshe, service users on Nostell ward at Fieldhead in Wakefield came up with two designs to transform their blank walls, holding a vote to choose their favourite.

Once the design was selected, one talented service user carefully planned and started the mural, with others adding their own contributions along the way.

Nateshe said: “We’ve wanted to add some colour to this lounge since I started on the ward a few years ago. Luckily, we have some very creative service users, so we decided to work together to create something special.

“The project has demonstrated the therapeutic value of creative collaboration, empowering the service users to express themselves in their own way. It has been great to see everyone enjoying the process, encouraging each other, and helping to create a more positive and welcoming space.

“Even those who didn’t pick up a paintbrush played a part, sharing ideas, support, and enthusiasm throughout. Everyone helped make it happen.

“We are now itching to do another!”

Service users commented: “It’s bright and colourful. It’s also got different bits to look at; it keeps your interest.”

“It makes me feel calm in a space which was quite clinical before, it has improved my mood being able to sit and look at this.”

“I think it means something different to everyone, we all interpret it differently and it’s really powerful, it makes me think of nature.”

“We love this space now, we enjoy sitting and chatting; it is more of a communal space to enjoy.”
