Wakefield mental health nurse Alan Stanley, 50, from Snydale has attended an exclusive garden party at Downing Street to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Open University.

Alan, who works for South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, completed his nurse training at the Open University in 2007 and was invited to the party, along with three other graduate nurses to represent Yorkshire.

At the party Alan met Gordon Brown and other high profile names including Lord Mandelson, Lord Putnam, and Baroness Boothroyd. Also at the event were professors from the university, ambassadors and other students.

Alan said, "Getting the opportunity to visit Downing Street was a real privilege and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I was very fortunate to be selected as one of the representatives from the region and I was thrilled to have been given such a fantastic opportunity."

Alan has worked for South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust for 8 years, starting out as a healthcare assistant. Since graduating from the Open University, he has continued making a difference to people with mental health problems at Fieldhead in Wakefield.

Alan’s ward manager Kay Marshall said "During his time here on the ward Alan has been an excellent staff nurse, with a highly proactive approach. He is truly dedicated to helping and empowering people with mental health problems and their carers. It was great that he had the opportunity to go to Downing Street and meet the prime minister, an experience that he both enjoyed and deserved."
