Our chairman is retiring – and we have two new non-executive directors

Date:

We have appointed two new non-executive directors, Angela Monaghan and Kate Quail. Our chairman, Ian Black, announced the appointments along with his own retirement. Read on to find out more.

Non-executive directors

Non-executive directors are local people whose experience and skills contribute to the effective management and accountability of our Trust. They work closely with executive directors to ensure the Trust runs in an open and transparent way.

Angela and Kate take up their appointments as non-executive directors on 1 August 2017. Their appointments were confirmed by the Trust’s Members’ Council on 26 July 2017.

Angela Monaghan

Angela Monaghan

A values led senior manager with an evidenced commitment to public service, Angela brings exceptional skills to the Trust. She has over twenty years’ experience of leading charities, social enterprises and NHS bodies, at both regional and national level.

Angela’s most recent role was as chief executive of Martin House, which provides hospice care for children and young adults across north, east and west Yorkshire.

Prior to joining Martin House, Angela was a non-executive director and then Chair of NHS Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield Primary Care Trust.  She has also worked in economic development in local government and studied economics at Cambridge.  Angela has been an active volunteer in her local community throughout her life and is committed to community-based development.

Kate Quail

Kate Quail

With a strong background at local and national level, working with charities and voluntary and community sector organisations, Kate brings rich expertise to the Trust. This includes change management and involving people to improve the quality of services.

Kate led two national support teams at the Department of Health. This included the national support team for children and young people’s emotional wellbeing and mental health which worked with Local Authorities, health organisations and voluntary and community sector partners to achieve better outcomes for children and young people.

Kate has a clinical background (a nurse, along with a degree in psychology) and has held various charity non-executive board roles including Royal Mencap Society and the Sheffield Parent Carer Forum. She was lead governor at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, and joint chair of the council of governors. She is also an expert advisor carrying out NHS England’s care and treatment reviews.

Speaking about their appointment Ian Black said: “Angela and Kate both bring vast and varied experience to our Trust and both share our passion for our values. They join and complement a highly skilled Board which will continue to lead our Trust and ensure we are accountable to our local communities via our members, including our brilliant staff.”

Angela Monaghan said: “I am honoured and delighted to have been appointed. I am inspired by the values-led approach of the Trust and hugely committed to both the services it provides and the NHS as a whole.  I hope to be able to use my experience to ensure the Trust continues to improve and always keep service users and carers at the centre of all it does.”

Kate Quail said: “The Trust has such a strong ethos of patient-centred care and quality, alongside a commitment to community ownership, co-production and involvement. Staff there provide excellent care and have an admirable passion for innovation and a creative energy which is brought to bear on all their services. I deeply share these values and aspirations and am thrilled to be part of such an inspiring organisation.”

Ian Black – retirement

Ian Black

Ian Black joined the Trust as a non-executive in 2008 and has served as chairman since January 2012. He retires at the end of November; a recruitment process for the new Trust chair will soon begin.

Speaking about his retirement Ian said: “Since I joined the Trust as a non-executive director in 2008 I have seen it come a very long way in a shifting political and NHS landscape. Over the five plus years I have served as chairman I have been privileged to meet many of our dedicated and passionate staff. I have seen the difference our Trust makes every day to the lives of local people, helping them live well in our communities and reach their potential. It has been an absolute privilege.”
