“I’ll owe you for the rest of my nursing career!” – two stories from our student nurses

Date:

Kate and Sonia are student nurses at different stages of their training. However one thing they have in common is they’ve both recently had a placement on Thornhill Ward at the Bretton Centre.

“I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy learning experiences across many of the dedicated and exceptional services throughout the Trust over the years.” Said Kate, now in her fourth year of nurse training.

“Thornhill has been my base area over these years – a ward I return to at the start and end of each academic year. From my very first day though, so it’s been so much more than that”.

Sonia is a third year student.

“I’ve been with Thornhill for the last seven weeks and I can truly say it’s been the best placement by far!”

“Everyone has been more like family to me, supporting me through the ups and downs. They’ve made me feel part of the team”.

The Bretton Centre is one of our low secure inpatient services. It’s where we provide care for male services users who either no longer need to be in more secure psychiatric services or cannot receive the care appropriately in prisons or other local mental health services.

Being relevant for today and ready for tomorrow, and putting someone first and in the centre are just two of our Trust values. They’re also aims of the Bretton Centre, towards staff and service users.

“The staff pride themselves on their reputation for being a welcoming and supportive team”, said Kate.

“They work hard to create a culture of enthusiasm and innovation and ensure that “going the extra mile” is part of their daily routine”.

“Everyone is so supportive”, said Sonia. “Everyone always had the time and patience to teach me and make me feel valued – something which I’ll owe you for the rest of my nursing career!”

Kate also agreed. “Throughout my training, I have been nurtured, supported and championed. The care, compassion and commitment shown by everyone on Thornhill is always extended to those joining the team. They have made their ward a wonderful place to be and a hard place to leave”.

It’s been a pleasure to be a student nurse at Thornhill”.

We often have many exciting placements and jobs for enthusiastic and dedicated workers. See how you can work for us.
