Occupational Therapy Week 2025: Meet Rebecca Webb

Date:

We’re celebrating Occupational Therapy (OT) Week (3-9 November) and this year’s theme is ‘Right support, right time: Unlocking the power of OT’ – with a focus on prevention and early intervention.

As part of the week, we’re sharing stories about our fantastic occupational therapists within the Trust and how they make a difference every day.

Hello my name is… Rebecca Webb

I work in… the Wakefield community team for adults with learning disabilities

How my role supports the shift to prevention and early intervention… by focusing on enabling our service users to be able to live as independently as possible in the community and to prevent the need for hospital admission. This is achieved through engagement in meaningful occupation, taking into account any sensory needs and environmental adaptations that may be required.

An example of someone I have recently worked with and has benefited from occupational therapy… A service user was referred to the learning disability team due to an increase in behaviours that challenge. A multi-disciplinary team (MDT) approach was taken with nursing, psychology and OT for the person to remain in their current supported living placement.

The nursing team discovered that this person had a lot of changes in the past year, including a bereavement and moving away from family. OT assessment indicated that this person engages at a sensory level (early developmental level). Strategies to support the person to engage in activities of daily living and sensory play activities were given to the staff team. A psychology assessment was completed to understand the person’s developmental age. Together, all this information was used to support the care team to understand the person’s support needs.

This proactive approach meant that the person was able to stay in their current supported living placement and prevent further changes happening in their life, which would have been unsettling and disruptive.

Thank you Rebecca for everything you and our occupational therapists do to make the lives of the people in our care better.
