The Balint Society helps patient-focussed professionals reflect on their work and gain a greater understanding of the relationship between doctor and patient.

Chris Douglas, who works from Folly Hall in Huddersfield, originally joined The Balint Society as a member. He worked towards becoming an accredited leader, before building on his skills to become an accredited supervisor.

Following a position as co-chair of the accreditation committee, Chris was then nominated to take on the role of president. As president of The Balint Society’s council, Chris will contribute to developing and shaping the society for the future.

Chris said: “I started doing Balint Groups, which are reflective practice groups informed by psychoanalytic experience but designed to be accessible to all, for resident (foundation year) doctors back in 2007. I’ve been running groups for doctors of various grades and specialties, including non-medics, ever since.

“I thoroughly enjoy running these groups, often with co-facilitators and I even attend as a member of a group myself once a month. I am honoured to have been given this role.”

Professor Subha Thiyagesh, chief medical officer at the Trust, said: “This excellent achievement is such a well-deserved recognition for all the commitment Chris has shown to this important aspect of therapeutic relationship.”
