The NHS and Castleford Tigers tackle men’s health

Date:

South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and the voluntary sector have teamed up with the Castleford Tigers to promote men’s health this weekend.

At the Castleford Tigers v Catalan Dragons match on Sunday 2nd September, staff from the Trust, which provides mental health, learning disability and some community services in Wakefield, will offer match-goers health checks and advice as part of a drive to raise awareness of mental health issues.

Alex Green, Community Manager, Castleford Tigers said, “We are delighted to assist South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust with this exciting initiative. A significant proportion of the Tigers fan base falls into the target group and by working together we aim to contribute to improving the health of the participants.”

David Cowan, health and wellbeing development worker for South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, said, “We will be at The PROBIZ Coliseum on Sunday checking for high blood pressure and screening for erratic heart beats, which are signs of potential risk factors for stroke and heart attacks. We will also have support from RightSteps and Rethink, which specialise in providing support around common mental health problems.

“We want to include everyone on the day, and will offer advice and information for both men and women, but the focus will be to raise awareness of heart health and mental wellbeing for men.

”Men are less likely to visit a doctor than women, so we have found bringing health checks and health information to men at sporting events a successful way of engaging with men in a place which is convenient for them and at a time when they don’t have work or other responsibilities to think about.”
