Do you see me?… by Catherine Horbury

To celebrate Learning Disability Week (15-21 June 2026) and the theme “Do you see me?” which is all about people with a learning disability being seen, heard and valued, peer support worker Catherine Horbury talks about her experiences and achievements working for the Trust.
“I am Catherine, a fun, loving, smiley person who loves to spend quality time with my family, friends and boyfriend. I especially love going to the cinema.
“I have a learning disability; however, I am much more than this. It has never stopped me doing great and inspiring things. I am an advocate for other people with a learning disability, speaking up for them when they can’t speak for themselves.
“I really enjoy being the joint Chair of the patient experience group with Debbie. I am a peer support worker at the Trust and work with GP practices as a quality-checker.
“I inspire others by being a member of Stronger Together, Wakefield strategic co-production group. I record the meeting minutes and take turns in chairing the meeting too.
“I have been to London to meet Sophie Wessex, to speak up for people with learning disabilities- that was an amazing experience.
“Finally, I want to share that last year I won an unsung hero award. I was so proud of myself . I want to continue being an inspiration to others.
