Mayor of Kirklees to open ward at Dewsbury and District Hospital
The local provider of mental health and learning disability services is holding a special event to mark the official opening of its new older people’s ward at Dewsbury and District Hospital.
The South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust recently re-located its inpatient services for older people in Kirklees to improved accommodation at ward 19 on the Priestley Unit at the hospital.
These excellent new facilities offer a modern and easily accessible environment to provide care to local people. To mark the move the Trust is inviting local partners, the Kirklees mayor, local MPs and Trust Members’ Council representatives to an event on Wednesday 30th March 2011.
The Mayor of Kirklees Andrew Palfreeman, has kindly agreed to perform the official opening and staff from across the Trust including the chief executive Steven Michael will be joining guests to mark the occasion. There will be an opportunity to see the new facilities and meet staff who work on the ward.
The 30 bed unit for older people has been designed to offer many benefits for service users, including: ?single rooms supporting privacy and dignity and better infection control ?increased space with lounges, quiet rooms, activity rooms and gardens ?bright and cheerful décor – based on the University of Stirling’s studies, recognised as experts in the design of facilities for older people with mental health problems ?use of technology to support vulnerable people, for example room sensors for those at risk of falling or who are disorientated ?A special multi-sensory room to reduce stress and anxiety.
Chief executive Steven Michael said, “We want to ensure people who need to use out inpatient services are able to access them in the right place, at the right time and benefit from the best care environment available to help them live life to the full. This redesign at ward 19 has enabled us to meet the needs of people who use the service and provide facilities that our staff are proud to work in.”
