New biomechanics suite opens in Barnsley

Date:

A new biomechanics suite which is set to further improve podiatry care for patients has been opened at Kendray Hospital in Barnsley. The suite, run by South West Yorkshire Partnership Teaching NHS Foundation Trust, helps the podiatry team to diagnose and manage problems of the foot and lower limb.

The suite was previously located in Silkstone, and has moved to Kendray Hospital as part of the Trust’s investment in local services to improve diagnosis and treatment for patients. The new surroundings have been named the Burston Suite, in recognition of a member of the team’s expertise and contribution to this area of care.

The new, larger space has enabled the service to install a number of new machines meaning the podiatry team can create more bespoke insoles for patients; in many cases while they wait. The team are able to shape insoles and create plaster cast impressions of the feet meaning that the insoles are tailored to meet each patient’s individual need. Using the new facility also means that more patients are being seen each week, helping to improve the efficiency of the service.

The suite has several consulting rooms and a designated area for the team to undertake walking analysis which includes observation of the knees, hips and foot. The new assessment area means that patients are treated in a one-to-one private space, helping to maintain dignity and safety.

Alongside treatment, the Trust’s podiatry team also provide health promotion and education to patients, health professionals and carers on a variety of foot health issues. You can find out more about Barnsley therapy services by visiting the Trust’s website at www.barnsleytherapy.co.uk
