NHS Trust and Kirklees charity join forces to celebrate World Mental Health Day

Date:

The South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and Kirklees charity Support 2 Recovery (S2R) will mark World Mental Health Day on Saturday 10th October with a celebration for the whole community.

The mental health charity has teamed up with Dewsbury and District Hospital’s Priestley Unit as part of the Trust’s Festival of Wellbeing, which aims to spread the message that 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem in the course of a year and promote mental wellbeing. The event at Batley Older People’s Centre takes place between 1pm and 5.30pm and will be a creative and fun celebration for everyone. Activities will include face painting, singing, arts workshops, Indian head massage and nail art. There will also be a tombola and raffle and a tea dance later in the afternoon. The event will provide people with the chance to get creative and also demonstrate the skills which members of the group have, from digital photography through to singing.

People of all ages and cultures are invited to the event and bi-lingual workers will be on hand to help with any interpretation needs.

Food and refreshments will be provided at a small cost, but all the main attractions will be free to those who attend.

The event is part of an 18 day festival being held across Calderdale, Kirklees or Wakefield, designed to mark world mental health day 2009. Over 150 events and activities are being held on the themes of ‘Get moving, get creative and get involved’. The Trust’s chief executive, Steven Michael, said: “This is an ideal opportunity to raise awareness of mental health issues, reduce stigma and promote wellbeing. We know that creativity, physical activity and social inclusion all make a big difference to wellbeing so our festival is concentrating on these areas. We want people in our local communities to be able to try something new to enhance their wellbeing.” Anyone who wants to join in can just turn up on the day or can contact S2R for more information on 01484 539531 or them at contact@s2r.org.uk
