About the service
The inpatient speech and language therapy service provides specialist assessment, advice and support for individuals where there is a concern around speech, language, communication and/or swallowing difficulties (dysphagia).
The service is available to any individual receiving care on a Trust mental health or forensic ward.
Why would someone choose the service?
100% of service users who attended our social skills group said they felt more confident and it had helped them with their transition.
Nursing staff have reported increased confidence in recognising the need for assessment knowing service users will be assessed promptly and consistently reviewed.
“Words cannot explain how supportive the service have been towards the staff, myself but also the service user, they epitomise what is good within the service” – ward manager feedback.

Outcomes
The service aims to ensure the communication and dysphagia needs of all service users receiving care on a mental health or forensic ward are met.
Patient safety is supported by reducing the risk of swallowing problems which can lead to malnutrition, dehydration, choking or aspiration pneumonia.
We work with service users, ward staff, family and carers and wider care team to reduce the communication barriers for service users promoting recovery and supporting reduced violence and aggression and length of stay.
