Wakefield stop smoking service hits the road

Date:

The Wakefield stop smoking service is inviting people who live and work in Pontefract and Wakefield to look before they leap this No Smoking Day to find out more about what help is available to quit smoking for good.

This year’s No Smoking Day, which is part of an initiative supported by the British Heart Foundation, takes place on Wednesday 14 March. On this day more than a million smokers are expected to make a quit attempt.

Sam Hunter, senior specialist stop smoking adviser at Wakefield stop smoking service said, "We know that most smokers would really like to stop, but find it hard to. So this No Smoking Day we want to make it as easy as possible for people to quit so will be bringing our service to you. The stop smoking team will be giving out information on all the support that is available to help you succeed in becoming a non-smoker in 2012."

Information stands will be setup at Sainsbury’s Trinity Walk in Wakefield and Pontefract Market from 9.30am- 3.30pm on Wednesday 14 March. Specialist advisers from the service will be on hand for anybody wanting to find out what help is available to support them to quit for good.

The Wakefield stop smoking team offers free friendly support on how to stop smoking. They also help with access to nicotine replacement therapy, Champix and Zyban, to help smokers who choose to quit smoking.

Figures show you’re four times more likely to quit smoking for good if you use NHS stop smoking services and as soon as you stop your body will begin to repair the damage caused by cigarettes, so it’s never too late.

Dr Andrew Furber, director of public health for Wakefield, said, "Two out of every three smokers want to quit and helping them achieve their goal is a priority across the Wakefield District. The good news is that recent smoking figures reveal that more people are quitting smoking in the Wakefield district than in most other parts of the country. We hope that this trend continues as quitting smoking is the most important thing anyone can do to improve their health."

If you can’t make it to one of the roadshows local people are also invited to drop-in to the Quit Shop in Wakefield before No Smoking Day and get ready in advance for their quit day.
