The ‘choose well for mental health’ guide for children and young people – toolkit for partners

Overview

This toolkit has been put together to help people and partners promote and share a guide to help children and young people in Barnsley, Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield choose well for mental health.

The ‘choose well for mental health guide’ for children and young people aims to:

  • Support people in looking after their mental health and wellbeing
  • Inform people about how to access the right support when they need it
  • Help people know what to do if they, or someone they know, experience a mental health crisis or emergency.

Parents, carers, families and friends can also use the ‘choose well for mental health’ guide to look out for children and young people close to them and help them get the right support and advice.

The guide has been co-created with children and young people with lived experience, and specialist healthcare teams who work with them, carers and their families.

What’s included

The ‘choose well for mental health’ guide for children and young people covers a wide range of support and advice, including:

  • Things people can do to help look after their own mental health, emotions and wellbeing (self-care)
  • Talking to someone
  • Family help and support
  • GP practices and referral to mental health services
  • Child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) for help with specialist mental health concerns
  • What to do in an emergency or crisis.

How you can help

We need your help in sharing this guide with as many young people, parents, carers and families as possible.

It is also important that we reach those who may work with young people, carers and families who may provide advice in a formal or informal capacity. This could include emergency service staff, voluntary and community sector staff and those working with young people in and outside of educational settings (e.g. sports clubs), to name just a few.

You can use the assets in this online toolkit to help:

  • Share the guide with young people, parents, carers and families you may work with
  • Share the guide with your staff
  • Forward the guide and toolkit to other organisations you may work with
  • Promote the guide on your website
  • Share the details of the guide in internal and external newsletters
  • Share social media posts
  • Put up posters in your organisations

We really appreciate your help in getting this guide out to as many people as possible.

If there are any other assets which are not available in the toolkit which may be helpful, or if you have any questions, please email comms@swyt.nhs.uk
